Things to be avoided in hyperthyroidism

There are certain foods and substances that can worsen your condition. The things that need to be avoided in hyperthyroid patients are:

    1. Alcohol
    2. Caffeine- Caffeine may worsen the jittery feeling in someone with overactive thyroid. It should be avoided all together for the same reason.
    3. Smoking
    4. High dose kelp supplements
    5. Iodized salt-Excessive consumption of iodized salt can trigger hyperthyroidism too. Therefore, it should be used in small amounts.

Re: Things to be avoided in hyperthyroidism

    Hi X

I am a bit confused as all the things it mentions I have a problem with I cant drink caffine I get very jittery, dioreah, heart palpatations etc and also if I smoke..

But I also have symptoms of Hypo and my T4 is very low normal and i have no estrogen.

I am quite slim but with pot belly, I am trying to quit smoking but the smoking relieves the ocnstipation as if its speeding my slow body up!!

Can it be possible to by Hyper and Hypo ??..maybe if I gave up smoking avoided caffine I would get more Hypo..sorry Iam confused but can relate to the hyper symptoms aswell...

When i have tea or coffee I feel like a car being driven with the breaks on, dont know if that makes it easier to explain what I mean..xx

    xx

when your adrenals are exhausted you swing between hypo and hyper all the time. I honestly think that all of your problems are hormones related plus you are very much stressed as well because of so much going on in your life. You have to clam down and start doing things properly.

Put yourself together and start from scratch. You are medicating your body and at the same time you are smoking so it's not gonna work. When you stop smoking, you'll have a tough phase but once it's gone, you will feel much better.

Honey it's not about posting...you can post and share as much as you want, that's what the forum is about. All I was trying to say try doing the right things as well if you are medicating like quit smoking because it has so much ill affect on the body specially cortisol levels.

Your parents ain't against you, it's just they going through some troubles themselves so they haven't got no time to understand your problem which isn't that simple anyway.

If you are spending money and doing tests, have a good doctor ready as well to understand the results and give you medical advise. Here we can all share well but by no means no one is doctor and everyone says stuff from what they are experiencing you know what I mean?

Your looks will recover and so is your health, it'll just take it's time so don't worry too much. Relax and sleep well.....and that will make half of the problems go away.

If you are well, you'll sleep nicely on the floor or else nice bed ain't worth it!

Re: Things to be avoided in hyperthyroidism

    Ha ha ha..thanks mate..x

The doctors have contacted me they have reduced my consultation from 170 to 110 and my blood test is going to be the full hormone panel at 140.00 they can test antibodies at an extra 40 but I cant afford it yet.

think antibodies would be very useful as GP cant argue with that test can he, maybe in the new year I can get the money. Its crazy I need to go to work to get some money but cant work as not well enough!!!

Yeah, I am goig to try and calm down a bit, i do notice a difference when i dont smoke.

My dads not very understanding thouhg I am not allowed to have a bath he has hidden the plug, Iam not allowed to use the oven and the heating is off all day, its so cold..if I dont give him money I am not allowe the basic things in life here. I dont watch the TV in my room as he is funny as I dont give him enough money like i did before..and it feels like your being punished for being ill and an nhs cock up!!!

I am hoping that when i go to the neuro at barts Saturday maybe they will look at my hormones see my T4 is very low and tie it up with my weakness but Iam not gonna hold my breath!!!
    take care mate
    Hope your okay

Re: Things to be avoided in hyperthyroidism

    SiD,
I'm glad to see this list posted, especially the mention of iodine overconsumption. I've actually had treated hyperthyroid patients write me, asking if kelp or other high iodine content foods or suppliments would help them and I would give them this same warning. There are companies out there recommending iodine supplements for thyroid disease in-general but the fact is, even autoimmune hypothyroid patients may experience adverse effects from it. The only thyroid condition iodine is used to treat is iodine deficiency hypothyroidism and the endemic goiters it causes.

"In genetically predisposed individuals the iodine intake modulates autoimmune thyroid reactions. Especially with acute or chronic increase of iodine intake it leads to a significant increase in the incidence and intensity of autoimmune thyroid disease."
