A pathological condition, Hashimoto's Thyroiditis which is also an autoimmune disease and also called the chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis, is associated with high-levels of thyroid antibodies. In this disease, the body's own T-cells affect the thyroid cells. The Hashimoto's Thyroiditis is considered to be the cause of the hypothyroidism in North America.

    Re: Thyroid Antibodies

Hashimoto's is the most common cause of hypothyroidism in the US but not the only cause. Hashimoto's may occur outside North America but is a less common cause.
