    Talking Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome

Classic presentation of polycystic ovarian syndrome or PCOS is an overweight woman with hirsutism (hair distribution in male pattern), absence of menstruation (amenorrhea), and infertility (inability to produce children).

Ultrasound examination is most often required to detect the disease along with high blood levels of hormones LH (Lutenizing Hormone) and androgens.

It is a quite commonly seen condition these days, and should be treated completely in order to attain normal body hair distribution and fertility.

    Re: Polycstic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS)

There is some funny side of the Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS):

PCOS has nothing to do with cysts on the ovaries!
The ovaries doesn't even need to have cysts on them to produce the symptom of PCOS.

PCOS is a actually caused by the dysfunction of the body's metabolism. The primary cause of PCOS is due to insulin resistance which directly results into hormonal imbalance.

My dear friend, you must have been mistaken. We have always been taught in our medical school that PCOS is caused by multiple cysts in the ovaries. The cases that occur due to no cysts are no longer classified as "PCOS".

The term PCOS might be used in place of any cause of hirsutism in general population, however, in medical reference the term is used only to refer to a diagnosed case of multiple ovarian cysts. It is NOT caused by imbalance in body's metabolism, but insulin resistance, obesity and diabetes are "correlated" with PCOS. They usually co-exist, but metabolic problems do not cause it.
