Thyroid collars - does your dentist do this?

I was reading that anytime you need to have an xray of your jaw, you should ask the dentist to use one. A thyroid collar's leadlined and they place it over your neck area to protect the thyroid from the radiation.

Given the sensitivity of thyroid to radiation and the delicate balance involved in thyroid treatments, it's best to use it whenever possible. Studies reported by the American Dental Association show the thyroid collar prevents anything between 2 -56% less absorption when you're shielded by this. Factors including how big the patient is (in children for example, it's cut by as much as 63 -92%), whether it's the lower or upper jaw and more account for the big differences in percentage but nonetheless,it helps and is recommended for routine use by the ADA.

It's worth keeping this in mind anytime you need an xray of the head/neck/collarbone area at the hospital too. If in doubt, mention to the radiographer before they begin you're being treated for thyroid problems.

Anyone had experience of using these?

I never really thought about this. We (everyone in our family) have had several x-rays in the past year. Although the dentist did not use a neck collar, he did place the shield all the way up to the chin.

Was it a lead apron he used, Hayward? Because apparently you can get attachments for those to incorporate a thyroid collar. He may have a design that already has that built in, of course. Good to hear he seems to have it covered.

    Terrible pun, I know.

Savannah, that is very good information and thanks for the source! I have been to the dentist and they did put a mat over my chest area, but I can't remember if it was over my throat, I will have to pay better attention next time.
Struggling to get my life back!

It was a lead apron, but to be honest, I can't remember the exact design.

I never had this experience before. Iím wearing braces for more than 4 years. Usually, it can be done in 2 Ė 3 years. But, my irregular follows up and long distance studies caused it delay. Iím still visiting my dentist monthly for check ups. If x-ray is needed, then I would ask for my thyroid collar.

I had maxillofacial surgery after I got my jaws broken in armed robbery at a gas station. There was multiple X-rays take before and after surgery. I don't remember them using the collar on me. Any way my Thyroid is not acting crazy yet.
