    Feeling Cold In Hands Feet?

A "weird" feeling of cold hands AND cold feet feet
A feeling of cold hands OR cold feet feet
    Extreme Sensitivity to cold

The above three symptoms are commonly noted by the hypothyroidism patients. What could be the cause for the "cold extremities"?

Re: Feeling Cold In Hands Feet?

Cold extremities in hypothyroid individuals occur due to the lowering of metabolic rate.

Due to decreased metabolic rate (because thyroid gland regulates our metabolic rate), the patients are not able to produce enough heat in their bodies. This leads to the development of "sensitivity" to cold along with cold extremities.

    Hope it helps!

Re: Feeling Cold In Hands Feet?

Cold intolerance is not restricted to hands and feet. I've known lots of people with hypothyroid and they all complain about being cold all the time - they usually like to get all bundled up. On the other hand, the hyperthyroid people are hot all the time. This is due to the increased metabolic rate. The irony for the hypothyroid people is that most morbidly obese people I know without hypothyroidism are usually hot due to excess fat storage. Yet, the obese ones with hypothyroid will complain about being cold. You would think that bundling up will increase sweating and might help them lose the weight.

While cold hands and feet are a symptom of hypothyroidism, they can also be a sign of poor circulation. Do you exercise aerobically? My friend used to be really sensitive to cold in his ankles until he started biking everywhere. Now his legs have better color and he isn't sensitive to the cold.

It could also be poor circulation not so? I know someone who's hands and feet get cold quickly but they do not have any thyroid problem.

But, it doesn't necessarily mean that if one gets cold hands and feet, that they automatically have thyroid problems, right. I want to know because I sometimes get these, though I am not diagnosed with thyroid problems. I do walk for about 30 mins a day.

There is actually a specific disease related to this, I cannot remember the name at the moment, but an associate of mine had it. He would have to wear gloves just to touch regular objects.
