    Prognosis of Hypothyroidism

With early treatment, striking transformations have been shown to take place both in appearance and mental function. Return to a normal state is usually the rule, but relapses do occur, and the disease might manifest again.

On the whole, response to thyroid treatment is most satisfactory. Therefore, it is advisable for all the hypothyroid patients to undergo treatment. If started in the early stages, it leaves no permanent disability. Even in later stages, the treatment has been shown to be successful.

    Re: Prognosis of Hypothyroidism

What type of thyroid treatment are you referring to? I have heard that sometimes surgery is suggested while other times pills are recommended. Which are you advocating as beneficial in most cases?

My big question is always what you should do as a regular test that you may have thyroid problems before it becomes acute?

    Re: Prognosis of Hypothyroidism

Treatment for hypothyroidism is most often with thyroid hormones. If someone has a really bad goiter or has nodules, they may also need surgery.

As for testing, daily monitoring is not useful. As I posted in another area, thyroid hormone levels take about 2-3 months to stabilize, usually closer to 6-8 weeks. That's why some people might feel their hormones are not working in the early days. And their dose might have to be readjusted, but usually not until time is given for the hormone to reach a steady state.
