    Losing Weight

Could it be that a person can have an inactive thyroid and yet be losing weight rather than gaining as a typical sign?

    Re: Losing Weight

I have a friend that would love to know about those cases because she just puts on weight rather than lose. Maybe the person who is losing weight has other complications that is causing it.

    Re: Losing Weight

Maybe they are doing something else to lose the weight. For instance it may be that they are anorexic, a reaction from seeing a constant increase in weight and wanting to do something about it.

Yes it can happen, in women during pregnancy and after pregnancy, the symptoms of hypothyroidism often includes weight loss, depression, difficulty in concentration, difficult memory, dizziness, and irritation.

Why the weight loss during and after pregnancy? The cause is still not known exactly, but it has been seen many times. During and after pregnancy, a female body undergoes a lot of psychological and physiological changes. These could affect the way the various hormones including the thyroid hormones work (or don't work) properly.

Yes, it can happen that way too. Some patients might present with weight loss while still being hypothyroid. There are several theories being presented to explain the cause, one being lack of thyroid hormones reduces the basal metabolic rate, and individuals might feel less needy to take meals. Moreover, constipation occurs in hypothyroidism commonly that can also precipitate weight loss due to improper digestion of food material.
