    Re: Psychological Problems

Any discomfort in your body I would imagine it could have a psychological effect. Look at most women during that time of the month - they definitely have a change of mood.

That is true. I guess I was looking at specific chemical imbalances in the brain more than just mood swings or emotional events.

    Re: Psychological Problems

The removal of the thyroid or having it malfunction must signal other changes in the body. What affects one body part tends to affect others, so who knows what other effects it can have: both neurological and physiological.

Again you are right Jones, I can't argue that with you. Maybe I will just have to accept that all things are connected and obviously if the thyroid is disrupted then it will affect other things.

    Re: Psychological Problems

I know that thyroid problems can cause depression and dementia. In fact, when someone comes in to talk about depression and dementia, they are often asked to donate some blood to run some tests and the thyroid tests are among them. At least, that's the case in the US.

    Re: Psychological Problems

Hayward is correct about it. Thyroid hormones can be the cause of depression. This is proven from studies conducted on women with postpartum depression. Hormone levels change during and after child birth and this is one of the reasons behind postpartum depression.
