New member with total thyroid failure

    Hi all,

I'm female, 49 and hypo. I was diagnosed 18 months ago when my thyroid failed completely. I have been on levothyroxine ever since, with the dose stabilised at 125mcg for the last 6 months.

I got some really weird test results yesterday which I've posted about in the appropriate forum.

Did anyone else have an ultra sound scan just after diagnosis? Why would this have been done? (Mine was clear, whatever that means)

    Hi @BennyP

Do you know the reasons why your thyroid failed completely? Was it due to Hashimoto's or Grave's disease?

Ultra sound tests are normally ordered to see there are no nodules or lumps around thyroid which could be an indication of cancer. It could also be used to diagnose expanding thyroid gland for a reason or other. I had mine done after visit to Endo but nothing came up as conclusive.

I don't know why it failed, I don't think my GP does either. I went from well to really ill in the space of 3 months.

Could it have been very early cancer which has now got worse? I had some really odd test results yesterday with very high T4 (gone up from 19 to 26 in the last 2 months, reference range is 10-23) with very high TSH. My thyroxine dose hasn't changed. My GP has referred me to an endocrinologist but in the meantime I'm having a right panic!

Take it easy.....you'll be alright. Thyroid things dont change overnight unless there is a major failure. Endo will have a bit more clue what's going on.

    Hi,

I had an ultrasound to detect any suspicious lymph nodes. I do not have a thyroid as in October I underwent a total thyroidectomy due to papillary carcinoma thryoid cancer.
