Test results help? Soy Milk and Thyroid issue

    Hello everyone,

I'm running out of options here so I figured I would give this a try. I've had horrible fatigue and a bit of stubburn weight that's been driving me crazy for about 5-6 years. I had a full thyroid panel done by my doctor and he said that I'm perfectly healthy but I need to look into more alternatives. Here are the results of my tests.

    T4, Total 7.2

    TSH, 3rd generation 1.28

    T4, FREE 1.3

    T3, FREE 3.6

    Thyroglobulin antibodies <20

    Thyroid peroxidase AB 11

Any suggestions? I would also like to add that I was consuming INSANE amounts of soy protein at the time. Most of it was in the form of soymilk. Could this be part of the problem? If so, is there a hormone treatment that could fix it? I know this sounds like I'm getting a bit ahead of myself but I'm being quite aggressive about this thyroid thing now. I can't just sit around and let this fatigue kill me.

    Hello @knarlycharlie
I am not an expert but I think there are loads other reasons for fatigue and weight gain apart from thyroid issues. Do you reference range for your thyroid results as it would be easier to see if they are normal.

Soy Milk and Soya products are known to cause depressed thyroid function and consuming large products could well be the reason. Even though your TSH is normal now, perhaps when you were consuming large soya products, you may have suffered partial underactive thyroid function?

Are you still struggling with fatigue and gaining weight?

I know there are a lot of things that could cause these issues but this was a last resort. Yes, I still have the fatigue and extra weight. The weight is EXTREMELY stubburn. I'm an athlete so this is particular frustrating. My weight responded quite normally until I turned 21. I went from having about 10% bodyfat to a bit over 20% in only a couple months. It was bizzare.

@knarlycharlie your thyroid results look alright to me but I am no expert. If I consume insane amount of milk, I am sure I'll swell as well. Perhaps it's a simple case of too much calories intake due to soy milk and products while little or small amount of exercise?

    Hi @knarlycharlie

Think you could do witha visit to GP to check for other issues like vit D deficiency and iron deficiency as there's a pile of conditions which can cause fatigue and weight gain.

Soya shouldn;tbe a problem as long as you have ahealthy diet with it which icludes plenty of greens for iron. if you're eatingmostly soya and not much else, a visit to the greengrocers may sort the problem

If in doubt see gp xx
