Pregnant and wanting info on treatment of thyriod cancer

Hi All, I am 33 weeks pregnant with my 6th child, during regular antenatal check up for Hashimoto's that I have had for 20 years now (I am not on any treatment at the moment) the endocrinologist suggested I am have thyroid cancer but we can't test until after bubs been born.

I would love to know more about the treatment, I can't see them again for a few weeks.
Things I would like to know are
    1) Do you feel well during treatment, as I will have a newborn and 5 other of kids to look after.
    2) Will I be able to breastfed, during treatment for cancer. This is a huge issue for me and has me very worried.

Any info about the treatment for cancer would be wonderful.
    Thank you

    Hi there @loving6

I have been pregnant with Graves disease but not with something like this, so unfortunately I can't help on the personal experience front. What I did want to say is the Macmillan Trust are brilliant for advice. I lost one of my long term partners to Cancer about a year ago and they helped him lots.I found some useful links fpor you but can;t post them here cos I'm new. have sent them to your pm box

    good luck with everything.

Thank you Dennis the links are a great help. I see my Ob's on Tuesday so I will have chat to them, I still have 3 weeks wait to see the endo's again. Bub seem healthy so that a really good thing to be focusing on right now.

I am sorry for your loss.

Wishing you the best of luck with everything @loving6 and an enjoyable pregnancy while you wait to meet your little one. Good luck with your Obstetrician, perhaps they have some more positive information. Glad the links were useful though I am sorry to be the bearer of not-so-brilliant news. I hope the docs have some better news anyway about the breastfeeding, at the end of the day each person needs individually assessing for these things.

Thinking of you and wishing you well. Glad Bub is doing great - pregnancy is one of the most magical times. none of my pregnancies were 'normal' but they were still the most wonderful times of my life next to meeting the new babies.

    Dennis and Mike.
    I have few more questions.

Is everyone who has the thyroid cancer treated with radioactive iodine?

Is it true that if you are treated with it you can't be close to other people for a while. eg that I won't be able to hold my baby?

If so, How long is that for?

@loving6 I was treated with RAI - I was given a choice for operation or RAI and I made a choice of RAI. The treatment works on the basis that it destroys whole of the gland. Cancer treatment would work in the same way as you get rid of cancer element of the part.

I am not sure how it effects pregnancy but you are not allowed to go out and mix with other people for a few days. I would imagine you couldn't do the treatment while you are pregnant or breast feeding your baby.

The treatment itself is only 5 min as you swallow a pill and go home. That's about it.
