Free T3 and Free T4 - Blood Tests not done until requested!

There was a BTF (British Thyroid Foundation) meeting where someone was incharge of the thyroid blood test at labsoratories.

Just wanted an expert's opinion on why to FT4 and FT3 blood tests are not done when TSH is within so-called range of 0.5 to 5.5?

Why can we only have our Free T3 tested when an Endocrinologist requests it?

When treating hypothyroidism it is ridiculous to monitor the patient by the TSH. The TSH can be affected by so many things. The Free T4 gives a far better picture.

    i agree

here in croatia, i go to my general practitioner (i think thats the word) and tell him to give me (i dont know how to translate this so: it's a paper on which doctor writes TSH, FT4, FT3, antibodys- with that paper i go to the lab to give my blood and next day i got the TSH, FT4, FT3, antibodys results).
no matter if my endo says only FT4 and TSH i can get FT3 and antibodyes too.

This is quite good because like Mike said, in the UK we only get FT4 and TSH in most cases. Some doctors wouldnt even do FT3 even when asked for it as according to them it's not necessary.

I remember speaking to a doctor at the hospital and he circled TSH word on results sheet telling me This is the most important number for a thyroid result. I laughed in my heart.
