Office Folders Extra Vitamin D in Breakfast cereals

SUN-starved kids will be feeling more snap, crackle and pop as Vitamin D is added to cereals.

Rickets is coming back as children’s indoor lifestyles mean they are not getting enough sunshine, so Kellogg’s announced yesterday it is fortifying its cereals – including Coco Pops and Rice Krispies – with the vitamin.

Pride of Britain teenager of courage Ryan McLaughlin, 15, who campaigns on multiple sclerosis causes, said: “Breakfast cereal can play an important role in boosting nutrient levels.”

Vitamin D deficiency is linked to conditions such as cancer, heart disease, high blood pressure, multiple sclerosis and rickets.
The bone-softening disorder rickets almost died out in the 1930s, but the British Dietetic Association found 82% of paediatric dietitians had seen an increase in the past five years and a study in Southampton showed 20% of children have signs of it.

Jacqui Lowdon, of the BDA, said: We used to get enough vitamin D from sunlight but we are not getting as much.

“Children are not playing outdoors as much as they used to and also people are slapping on suncream a lot more.

“So if we can get vitamin D into food children like to eat, that’s fantastic.”

@Mike interesting idea but I do wonder how healthy these cereals are even with extra Vitamin D in them.
Struggling to get my life back!
