    Scar tissue

I had a total thyroidectomy in 2007. In discussions prior to my surgery i was told that i would have a small scar that would barely be seen as it would be hidden in the crease on my neck and i would be able to wear a neckalace to cover it up. However this wasn't to be in my case. Possibly due to the fact that the goitre had grown so large that it had reached up into my chin and my skin is prone to keloids my scar is highly noticable. In total my scar is 3 inches in length, still raised and i have a 1 inch dark keloid on one end and still to this day putting anything against the scar feels uncomfortable. I had used Dermatix twice a day for a year which has greatly reduced the outward appearance of the scar and reduce the scar internally but it is still highly noticeable. So much so that i frequently have people asking what has happened to me and occassionally get stupid questions such as has someone tried to kill me. This can be quite distressing as even strangers think it is ok to approach me and ask or give me their opinions telling me how awful it looks. In particular i find it quite distressing as i am only 32 and instead of being looked at for making the most of my appearance i now find people staring right at my neck. Despite this i refuse to have to cover it up to fit in. Has anyone else had any problems with scarring and what have you done to reduce it? The last discussion i had with my doctor steroid injections were mentioned has anyone had these done?

    Re: Scar tissue

    Hi therbrg,

Very sorry to hear about your problem and yes it is quite disturbing when people approach you to give their apparently "free opinion" which in their would help us

I dont have a much clue regarding scars myself but poor healing may be one of the reasons as well as your thyroid is partially or totally removed and body wouldnt function in the same way as before. I've also noticed that skin is not exactly the same it used to be so may be scar is still there because skin hasnt healed properly?

When I had a choice, I went with RAI and refused to do the surgery as I wasnt confident enough of Surgeons in this area. I am glad I made this decision

Scar tissue, on another thyroid forum I read that Bio=Oil was very good for healing and many people recommended it. When my OH went into hospital for a knee replacement operation I got some for him and he used it frequently and daily on his scar, and it healed beautifully, much better than the previous one.

With a total of 55 clips his scar will never disappear, but the thyroid op. folk found their scars very un-noticeable if they used this oil from the start. Its worth a try.

Hi there and to the site!!

I'm so sorry you have had people say horrible things like this to you, poeple should just keep their mouths shut if they haven't got nothing nice to say IMO!!

Bio oil is great for scars and strech marks my wife swears by it as it reduced her strech marks from when she was pregnant. I dont know what you have told your doctor, have you told him this very story about how your confidence has been ruined by this? I would. I dont know whether laser surger would help? (you should ask him about it)
Ask to be referred to a dermotoligist!! Or maybe these steriod injections will help. I dont know, but if your so unhappy, you have to fight for the very best treatment, the NHS will go to amazing legnths to refuse treatment to some, and give out willy nilly meds/ops to people who should nt have it!!

GP's know a little about a lot, we all need someone who knows alot about a little Aka a specialist! thumbup

    Re: Scar tissue

Although RAI would have been my first choice my graves disease symptoms included graves ophthalmopathy and a very large goitre so surgery was the only appropriate action. for all your comments and suggestions. I haven’t discussed my experiences or how I feel about my scar in great detail with my doctor. I know I shouldn’t but I always feel like a hypochondriac since I always have along list of problems every time I go. So I tend to only push for the more critical problems first. At my next appointment I will request a referral to a dermatologist so that I can find out about all treatment options. In the meantime I will look into bio oil. I have seen the adverts but I had obviously wrongly assumed that as it is a commercial product then it wouldn’t work as well as a medically prescribed product. again.
