    Hi All

    Hi All,

    I'm fairly new to this.
I was diagnosed with an over active thyroid at the age of 11 and subsequently had part removed when I was 16. I am now 30 and have been having trouble recently as I'm feeling like I have a constant lump in my throat i have been told by the hospital I could possibly have Thyroiditis will this affect me having children as my husband and I were just about to start trying for a family before this started...

Hi lmhiggins and welcome to the forums

I am very much surprised that you had an overactive thyroid at the age of 11 only. Didn't hear much about guys have thyroid issues at this young age though girls are affected.

When you say part of the thyroid removed, was it surgically or by any other means? Did Doctors say they have only part or full of the thyroid as in most cases, it's better to remove full thyroid or else you suffer hyperthyroidisms at a later stage in life. Were there any tests carried out at all and what were the results at that time?

You should definitely have some full thyroid tests and ultrasound scan of the neck to identify the real problem. Do you have any other symptoms like fatigue, weight gain etc or just the lump which has made you visit your doctor?

Unfortunately nobody can tell you that your children and future family is going to be affected by thyroid related issues as usually this runs in genes and sometimes it is passed to the kids as well. Having said that, I don't think you shouldn't try having a family as I know a lot of people with thyroidal issues and apparently their kids are doing fine.

Fortunately I am stil single but quite a few members on this forums are happily married so hang on while they share their experience.

    Hi
Any decent doc would refer you for specialist help I think if they know you are trying for a family. Raise it - you have nothing to lose. Being married is lovely - I have been married for 30 years and am very happy - as is parenthood, and now for me, grandparenthood. I'd go for it!
