Arthritis may be at increased risk for thyroid disease. Patients who suffer from joint and tendon inflammation are at higher risk. Painful tendonitis and bursitis of the shoulder was reported in 6.7 percent of thyroid disease patients, but occurs in only about 1.7 percent of the general population.

In some cases, the pain and stiffness improves in thyroid patients when their thyroid condition is diagnosed and stabilized on medication.
