    What should he do?

My friend had fainting spells and hus heart started racing when he took over the counter cold medicine. Is this because he`s hyperthyroid? What foods can he eat, and what foods should he avoid if he`s hyperthyroid or hypothyroid? Are there foods that cause a goiter to develop? Will taking supplements or avoiding iodized salt help or prevent a thyroid condition?

Your friend was probably having a reaction to some ingredient in the cold medicine. It does not mean he is hypo or hyperthyroid just because he had a fainting spell or had palpitations. However, it cannot be discredited, so he should be checked out by a doctor. Cold medicines contain many things, including alcohol, that can cause problems.

Like Hayward said, best thing would be to visit his GP before something goes wrong

See a doctor as everyone else said. In regards to your goiter question, the answer is sometimes. There is a specific type of goiter that can arise due to diet. Eating food items such as soybeans, cabbage, peanuts, peaches and spinach can promote the development of a goiter known as a sporadic goiter.
